The extreme fluctuation in oil prices is just one of the many challenges affecting the global economy. How might alternative energy scenarios around the globe ease dependence on oil and perhaps help rebuild our global economy? What can we learn from our European partners in terms of energy efficiency and conservation? What effect do new rising powers have on global energy demand and world markets? Michael T. Klare is the Five College Professor of Peace and World Security Studies (a joint appointment at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst), and Director of the Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies (PAWSS). Dr. Klare has written widely on U.S. defense policy, the arms trade, and world security affairs. Most recently, he has written Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy (2008). He is also well known for his 2004 book, Blood and Oil, and has contributed articles to many publications. Dr. Klare serves on the board of directors of the Arms Control Association, and the advisory board of the Arms Division of Human Rights Watch. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University in 1963 and 1968, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of the Union Institute in 1976.
